Kota Kinabalu: Sabah had the highest poverty rate in the country last year at 19.5 per cent according to the Statistics Department which also showed about 40 per cent of the indigenous people in the State are poor or below the Poverty Line Income (PGK).

Minister in the Prime Minister Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (pic) said Tongod, Pitas and Kota Marudu are among the poorest districts in the country with poverty at about 50 per cent.

He said the poverty rate would have increased drastically during this Covid-19 pandemic had the Federal Government not provided assistance through the Prihatin economic stimulus package and Penjana stimulus package.
