Has Zahid lost control of Umno?

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A PPBM leader today said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s recent remark that his party’s MPs were free to do as they pleased was unacceptable, on the back of the opposition’s claim that it has got enough support in Parliament to form a new government.

PPBM Supreme Council member Rosol Wahid said Zahid’s (pictured) statement gave the impression that he had lost control of the party and its members.

“As a leader, you must have the command of your members. Now, it appears that he does not have the stand and has no power to control his leaders and members,” he said on the sidelines of an event here today.

“Zahid should not have made such a comment that Umno MPs are free to do what they want.

“Maybe he has different intentions by making such a statement. But as a leader of a party, it is not right.”

Rosol, who is deputy domestic trade and consumer affairs minister, said it was therefore no surprise that many were criticising Zahid for the remark.

He said he had asked his Umno friends about the talk that some Umno MPs would be backing PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and was told it was mere rumour.

He said Anwar should pursue a no-confidence vote in Parliament, rather than making wanton announcements.

“I feel Anwar’s announcement is just a political play for the Sabah election. This, however, has led to a plunge in the stock market and unnecessary panic among the people, which is not good for our country,” he said.

Anwar on Thursday claimed he could form a new government with a strong and formidable majority support from MPs, whom he said mostly comprised Malay-Muslim elected representatives.

While several Umno and BN leaders were quick to dispel talk of defections to Anwar’s side, Zahid said he had been informed that many Umno MPs were in support of the opposition leader.

He said he respected their stand and could not stop them from supporting Anwar, adding that BN had never officially joined PN.
