Defeating five candidates, Kiulu was considered a hot seat as the incumbent was challenged, among others, by Upko President Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, who is also the Tuaran Member of Parliament.

The other four challengers were Rozylyn @ Rosalyn Gelunu from the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Andau Yasun Bruno from Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) and two independent candidates Joliania Lampog and Dominic Yasun.
