Can’t insist on not collecting the full rental

Kota Kinabalu: Although the PN Federal Government has provided tax relief for property owners claimable for not charging or reducing rent on their commercial property by entrepreneurs affected by the MCO lockdown imposed on March 18 to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, the government has no power to force the private sector landlords not to insist on collecting full rental dues stipulated in signed tenancy agreements.

This differs from rent payment relief that the government can provide to tenants renting property belonging to the government sector and its agencies.

“The government is aware of the burden faced by entrepreneurs renting premises to do business and liable to pay rental during MCO. The government cannot force the private sector on such matters.”
