Protected birds worth RM280K rescued in first 9 months

Kuala Lumpur: A total of 1,978 birds from 16 protected species worth approximately RM279, 960 were seized by Perhilitan and the General Operations Force (GOF) through several operations carried out from January to Sept 28 this yearCentral Brigade GOF Commander SAC Muhammad Abdul Halim said Ops Khazanah was carried out throughout the period in Selangor and Johor, with three perpetrators arrested.

He said the first operation was carried out on Jan 1 this year jointly by the GOF’s Central Brigade (Briged tengah) and the Perhilitan Enforcement department in Senggarang Johor which resulted in the seizure of 1,825 protected status birds worth approximately RM 120,300.

The birds that were seized from that particular operation was of the Oriental Magpie-Robin (Burung Murai Kampung),and White-rumped shama (Burung Murai Batu) species.

Muhammad, however, said that no arrests were made in the first operation as the birds were found at a storage facility. The second operation was carried out on Aug 24 in which the GOF’s Central Brigade and Perhilitan enforcement department raided the residence of two men in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur and seized 90 birds worth approximately RM70,460.

He said the birds included the White-breasted waterhen (Burung Ruak-ruak), Hanging parrot (Burung Serindit) and Indian white-eye (Kelicap kunyit). Muhammad said investigations into the case are ongoing under Sections 60(1)(a) and 68(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). In the third raid conducted on Sept 28, sixty-three birds were confiscated from a 49- year-old man in Setapak. “ The birds seized were of the Leaf bird, Stripe-throated Bul-Bul, Scarlet minivet and several other species,” Muhammad told a press conference at the Perhilitan Headquarters here. Muhammad said that more operations will be held to prevent illegal wildlife trade, and urged members of the public to feed information to them of any illegal activities in their vicinity.
