KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Road Transport Department (RTD) is now tracking down cloned-car syndicates using social media platform to sell the vehicles to the public.
Its director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf
(pic) said that the current ‘modus operandi’ of the syndicate is to advertise the vehicles openly and no longer in secret as before.
“They (the syndicates) sell luxury vehicles of foreign brands at 50 per cent cheaper than the market price depending on the brand.
“Usually the targets are those aged 35 to 45 who want to own a stylish and foreign-branded car... they don’t think about the impact on themselves as long as their wishes are fulfilled,” he told reporters after the vehicle auction programme at the Kelantan RTD office here, Tuesday. Hanif Yusabra also urged the community not to be easily influenced by the advertisements for selling cars at prices that are too cheap and unreasonable.
“If in doubt with the price offered, the community can go to the nearby RTD offices to confirm the status of the vehicle before buying and finally being deceived,” he said.
He said that since the enforcement started in 2011 until now, a total of 204 cloned cars have been seized. “Of the total, 21 cases have been resolved in court involving fines of RM379,300 which have been imposed on the owners of the vehicles.
“For the offence of possessing a cloned vehicle, the owner or driver will be charged for three offences under the Road Transport Act 1987, including Section 7 (1) which is owning an unregistered motor vehicle and Section 108 (F) which is displaying any motor vehicle any licence or identification mark, plate or document which does not belong to such vehicle,” he said.
