Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old policeman was charged at the Magistrate’s Court, here, Friday with extorting money from a man, last month.
Nizam Jaluddin, who appeared before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie via video teleconference proceedings, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Nizam was accused of extorting RM500 from Rudy Ramlee by putting him under fear by telling Rudy that action would be taken against him if he did not give him the money.
The offence allegedly took place at 7pm on Sept 27 at Jalan Keramat, Lorong Bunga Bawang here.
The charge under Section 384 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishment, upon conviction.
Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit applied for a case management date and proposed bail at RM6,000 in two sureties.
Nizam, who was at the Central Lock-up in Kepayan, applied for a lower bail amount on the grounds that he is a policeman attached to the Karamusing police station.
Stephanie set Dec 17 for case management and offered Nizam bail at RM2,000 in two sureties.
In another case, a 15-year-old girl was charged with having stolen vaping products.
The accused allegedly having three units of pods, two bottles of compatible pod, two boxes of cartridge pod, a handphone and a bunch of key belonging to the Vape Station shop at 5pm on Oct 5 at Inanam Capital.
The charge was framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code.
No plea was taken from the accused, whose case also held via video teleconferencing proceedings.
The prosecution in applying for another mention date, proposed bail at RM4,000 in two sureties.
The court set Nov 18 for mention of the case at the Court for Children and offered the accused bail at RM1,000 with her parents as sureties.
Meanwhile, a man pleaded guilty to a charge of having 0.09gm of syabu.
However, the court deferred the case of Mohd Sharif Ismail to Dec 3 for facts and sentencing as applied by the prosecution and offered him bail at RM1,800 in two sureties.
Sharif could be fined up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail if convicted under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Sharif, whose case also held via video teleconference, was also facing another two charges of taking syabu and having syabu.
However, the court adjourned the cases to Nov 17 and Dec 16 pending for the chemist’s reports and offered Sharif bail at RM1,000 and RM1,800 respectively for the taking syabu and having syabu charges.
In the same court, six other people including two foreigners were charged with having syabu.
Three of the six were also charged with having syabu.
However, no plea was recorded from them pending the outcome of the chemist’s reports.
The court set mention date between Dec 3 and Dec 16 pending chemist’s reports and offered the accused bail except for the foreigners, between RM1,800 and RM1,000.
The cases of five of the accused, were held via video teleconference proceedings, while one accused was brought in an open court.
The court also imposed an additional order that all accused in Friday’s proceedings can only be bailed out upon having their respective Covid-19 swab test result from the Health Ministry.
All accused, whose case held via video teleconference proceedings, were at the Central lock-up in Kepayan.
