38-year-old Marudu house razed
The fire at its peak engulfing the house.
KOTA MARUDU: A 38-year-old house known by residents as the late Simon Wong’s house was razed in Kg Lotong near, here, Monday.House owner, Allen Simon Wong said his wife, three children and maid were at home when the incident took place.

Although he is sad that the family house is destroyed, he is thankful that his family is safe.

“All seven of them, including our maid, managed to flee to safety,” he said, adding that they didn’t get to salvage anything.

He said the fire broke out at about 9.30am and everyone in the house panicked after realising that one of the rooms was on fire. “They called the Fire and Rescue Department, but the line was busy, perhaps because neighbours were also trying to call the firefighters.

“It was a relief when the firefighters finally arrived,” he said. Meanwhile, Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Rony Sikawan, said 12 firefighters were deployed to the scene following a 9.45am distress call via MERS 999.

He said the team managed to bring the fire under control at about 10.24am. The operation ended at about 1.15pm.
