PETALING JAYA: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) lodged a police report after discovering scammers had impersonated its Employment Services Officers to target unsuspecting victims.
Socso Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed
(pic) said the organisation lodged the report on Wednesday after a scammer used the profile and phone number of one of its officers to deceive his other colleagues in the organisation.
“The scammer contacted some of the officer’s colleagues and requested a sum of money to be transferred to a bank account under a different name.
“One of his colleagues was tricked into transferring RM500 to the account holder.
“When asked why he needed help, the imposter allegedly claimed he was unable to access the online banking services,” Mohammed Azman said in a statement.
He said such unscrupulous action by irresponsible parties have undermined Socso’s efforts in carrying out its Active Labour Market Programmes to assist those insured and lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 crisis.
He explained in carrying out the programmes through its Employment Insurance System (EIS) office, Socso discloses the names and phone numbers of its officers so the public can easily contact them and obtain the relevant information. “The dissemination of information on Socso services via social media, however, has attracted scammers to pose as our Employment Services Officers to commit such crime against the public,” he said.
Mohammed Azman said if anyone is requested to make payment for Socso’s services, they should be wary and check with the organisation immediately.
He said Socso does not engage middlemen to deliver its benefits and services.
The organisation also doesn’t ask for payments for the work carried out, Mohammed Azman added.
