Volunteers prepare lunch for Semporna frontliners
SEMPORNA: Residents of Kampung Inabah Kamal and Kampung Sabdi organised “gotong-royong” to cook food for Covid-19 frontliners to show their appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifices in fighting the outbreak in Semporna.

Known as the Frontliner Kitchen, the residents prepare food, comprising chicken rendang or curry, with rice, as well as vegetable and fruits, and a bottle of mineral water for each of the frontliner on duty.

Frontliner Kitchen coordinator, Rhena Ismail, said the idea was mooted by two housewives, Salhah Ayub and Rahmawati Ganding, who were overwhelmed by the commitment of the frontliners in discharging their duty that they sometimes missed their meal to ensure the people are free of C0vid-19.

“That is why this initiative is taken, 450 food packs are distributed in two phases to frontliners at the Emergency and Trauma Division of Semporna Hospital, health clinics, Qurantine Centre at the Bubul Ria People’s Housing Project and at roadblocks, including those at sea,” she told Bernama today.

Rhena said the Frontliner Kitchen is run by 20 women, from doing the marketing, cooking , packing and distributing the food.

“The fund is raised from contributions by residents, including members of the Frontliner Kitchen. We start cooking as early as 5.30 am so that by 11 am, we can start distributing the food so that the frontliners can have their lunch on time,” she added.

According to Rhena, there are many other NGOs in the district, such as NGO Yayasan Kasih Tawhid and the Hugs Project, that have been helping in the preparation of food packs for the frontliners.

She hoped that the frontliners in Semporna would persevere and remain spirited in discharging their duty to help flatten the Covid-19 curve.

“The people of Semporna need them and will do the best to help ease their needs. Our hope is for this situation to end,”she said.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) also took the initiative to distribute food supply to residents in Kampung Bangau-Bangau, among the localities being placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

The food aid was presented by ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali, who represented ESSCom Commander Datuk Ahmad Fuad Othman, to 100 residents.

Mohamed Pajeri said ESSCom cares about the plight of the residents, especially those who are subjected to EMCO.

There are five localities in Semporna placed under EMCO, namely Kampung Panji, Kampung Selamat, Kampung Simunul, Kampung Pinggir Bandar and Kampung Bangau-Bangau.
