Man charged with disposing of stolen items

Kota Kinabalu: A scrap metal collector was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, here, with two counts of disposing of stolen items.

Willy Kabumani, 34, was brought before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to face the charges under Section 414 of the Penal Code.

However, no plea was taken from Willy after the charges were read out to him in Bahasa Malaysia as he does not understand the language.

On the first count, Willy was accused of disposing of an aluminium iron at 6am on Oct 9 at a house in Kg Pondo, Pulau Gaya.

While on the second count, Willy allegedly disposed of a stolen aluminium iron which has the name Marine Diesel Generating Set (Weichai) on it, at a house also in Kg Pondo, Pulau Gaya at 7.30pm on Oct 9.

Each count carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction.

Meanwhile, Willy was also charged with another count of taking syabu.

No plea was recorded from him while waiting for the chemist’s report.

The charge under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years of jail, upon conviction.

The prosecution applied for another mention date pending the presence of a Bajau Ubian interpreter and objected bail for Willy on the grounds that he has no valid document and is also facing many charges.

The court set Dec 14 for mention of the cases pending the Bajau interpreter and ordered Willy to be remanded further.
