Filipino gets jail for disposing stolen cash register

Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court here on Friday sentenced a 19-year-old Filipino to four months jail for disposing of a stolen cash register machine.

William Majid Pungga, an ice lifter in a fish market pleaded guilty to committing the offence at 2pm on Oct 13 in a roadside drain along Jalan Penampang–Tambunan in Penampang.

Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun heard from the prosecution that complainant, Suzanah Mohd Othman, lodged a police report on Oct 13 that her shop in Donggongon town was broken into and that a cash register machine along with RM300 in it was stolen.

William was then detained by police following the arrest of two men who were investigated for burglary.

Unrepresented, William requested for a lenient sentence as he had to take care of his parents and younger siblings.

When asked by the court on how the item ended up in a drain, William replied that he saw his friends threw the cash register machine at the said area and that when he was arrested and was asked where his friends threw the said item, he led the police to the area and pointed it to them.

William was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both on conviction.

In another case, two Filipinos were jailed one month and fined RM100 or one month jail each for having two rolls of copper wire believed to be stolen.

Altani Kasim, 28, and Mohd Sapin Suhaimi, 20, pleaded guilty to having the items and failed to give an explanation on how they obtained them at 2pm on Oct 27 in a house at Kg Sembulan Lama here.

The court heard that a police report was lodged on Oct 21 regarding theft of Telekom cable at Jalan Sembulan Baru and Sembulan Lama as well as Kg Sembulan.

Altani and Sapin, who was unrepresented, requested a lenient sentence.

They were jointly charged under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance which provides for a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months jail or both on conviction.

The court ordered William, Altani and Sapin to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentence.

Inspector Albert Basiri prosecuted.
