JAKARTA: Central Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Heru Novianto said the police had arrested 10 students in the demonstration in front of the French Embassy Building in Central Jakarta. The students were detained as the police said they had no business whatsoever either in the demonstration or the one staged by workers in front of the Arjuna Wijaya Statue.
“They were not workers or from mass organisations. The point is that we are questioning them because they brought a gun, a toy gun,” said Heru in Central Jakarta on Monday.
The police chief asserted that bringing a toy gun in public did not violate the law, but he said the problem was that they brought it to a crowded event such as a demonstration.
To prevent causing panic the students that were all under the age of 17 were temporarily detained.
A group of protesters consisting of members of the PA 212 group and the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) gathered in the Sarinah Thamrin intersection to approach the French Embassy nearby, but were held back by the police.
The protest came in the wake of the recent statement made by French President Emmanuel Macron following the vile terror attacks in the country.
