‘Shafie was afraid of Mahathir’

Kota Kinabalu: Former Sabah Assistant Finance Minister Kenny Chua said Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal tried to impose the 5 per cent sales tax on petroleum products on Petronas when he was chief minister but did not pursue it for fear of offending former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir.

He said it was only after Warisan became an opposition resulting from the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government that Shafie, their president, showed determination to pursue the matter.

Mahathir had been reported to have refused to give Sabah and Sarawak the oil sales tax from Petronas.
