When Tunku’s plan to force Brunei backfired
Local historian Shari Jeffri receiving memento from Sabah Society President Dr Heng after a talk on Brunei Sultan’s control of the Sembulan River before the British era.
Kota Kinabalu: Some history academics concurred with Tan Sri Harris Salleh’s opinion recently on the Malayan Malay dominated federal and state civil service that they likened to a Malay deep state within the previous Umno dominated government (Alliance and Barisan Nasional administration) that continued even during the brief tenure of the Pakatan Harapan government (May, 2018 – Feb, 2020).

Harris, a former Sabah Chief Minister had opined that the Malay deep state would have rendered a Prime Minister from Sabah or Sarawak to a “paper tiger”.

According to Borneo studies buff Kassim Mohd Mudin, “Sultan of Brunei wanted the British to train more Bruneians into Brunei’s civil service as the British had done by setting up the Malay College at Kuala Kangsar recruiting sons of royal and loyal Malays, in the peninsula.”
