JAKARTA: Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said Monday the government “regretted” the series of health protocol breaches in two events that were attended by Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab.

The events Mahfud referred to were the wedding reception and the religious commemoration in Petamburan, the Central Jakarta location where Rizieq resides.

“The government regrets that health protocols were violated in the public wedding and the ‘maulid nabi’ commemoration held in Petamburan, Central Jakarta,” said the oordinating minister on Monday.

Mahfud MD in his virtual press conference said Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan had been reminded by the central government to enforce proper Covid-19 health restrictions and not tolerate any violation.

He added that coronavirus infections had increased for the past week in the capital, which he attributed to the large crowds welcoming Rizieq Shihab back to Indonesia right after his self-proclaimed self-isolation in Saudi Arabia. “Large crowds formed on November 10-13 across Jakarta, West Jakarta, and areas in its vicinity,” said Mahfud MD.
