Covid-19 cases back to 4 digits with 1,290 cases, 4 deaths

PUTRAJAYA: The health ministry has reported 1,290 Covid-19 cases and four deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 878 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 38,132.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the 1,290 cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 51,680.

Meanwhile, the four deaths bring the toll to 326.

Sabah recorded the most number of Covid-19 cases today with 660 infections. Of the total, 250 cases were detected in temporary detention centres, lockups and prisons. The Sandakan Prison cluster alone accounted for 218 cases.

This was followed by Selangor with 407 cases, 245 of which came from the Teratai cluster and the newly-identified Kapas BJ cluster. Noor Hisham said these were both workplace clusters involving foreigners.

Of the new cases today, only five were imported cases. From the 1,285 local transmissions, a total of 269 were from prisons or temporary detention centres.

Aside from the 218 cases in Sandakan Prison, the other Sabah prison clusters reporting new cases today were the Matambai (15), Kepayan Prison (nine), Tawau temporary detention centre (six), and GK Tawau (two) clusters.

Among the existing prison clusters in the peninsula, Tembok in Kedah recorded 15 cases, while Benteng PK in Selangor and Seberang Perai Prison in Penang recorded three and one new infections, respectively.

The other new cases reported today were in Kuala Lumpur (72), Perak (48), Negeri Sembilan (32), Kelantan (17), Labuan (15), Johor (15), Penang (eight), Sarawak (eight), Kedah (seven) and Melaka (one).

Terengganu, Perlis and Pahang are the only states that did not record any new Covid-19 infections today.

Of the four deaths recorded today, two were from Sabah, one from Perak and another, Johor. They were aged between 29 and 62, and all of them suffered from chronic health diseases.

There are currently 13,222 active cases, with 110 patients in intensive care and 37 requiring respiratory assistance.
