Kota Kinabalu: A video of healthcare workers dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE) singing and dancing the Sumazau for patients at a Covid-19 quarantine centre in Sabah has gone viral.

A few short videos, believed to be taken at the Penampang Cultural Centre near here, showing a healthcare worker singing a popular local number called “Original Sabahan” and his co-workers dancing to the tune, made the rounds since yesterday evening.

Also seen in one of the videos is what is believed to be patients dancing the Sumazau, or a traditional Kadazan dance, as healthcare workers entertained them with the song at the centre which can accommodate 100 beds.

A medical staff who declined to be named said the workers had only wanted to cheer up the patients as well as other frontliners at the centre.

“They never intended for the video to go viral. It looked like a patient had also recorded their performance and shared it online and that is how it went viral.”

The worker said the team was aware of the emotional and mental strain patients and other colleagues were under, hence, they came up with the idea.

“It was all well-intended and the team hoped it would more or less brighten up everyone’s day.”
