Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was jailed a month for failing to give reasonable explanation how he got three selangan woods, believed to be stolen, which belonged to Sabah Parks.
Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie meted out the sentence to Sanisi Jonip Mandusi who pleaded guilty.
Sanisi committed the offence together with another accused Mohd Zat Taat, who was not present in the proceedings and an accomplice still at large, at 2pm on Nov 2 this year at a house in Kg Pondoh, Pulau Gaya, here.
The charge stated that Sanisi failed to explain to the police how he obtained the selangan woods valued at RM300.
The offence under Section 22A(1) of the Minor Offences carries a jail term of up to three months, or a fine of up to RM100, or both, upon conviction.
For Mandusi, the court set Dec 17 for mention.
During mitigation, Sanisi, who was not represented, asked for leniency saying that he is married.
He confessed to the court that he stole the woods.
The court was informed that Sanisi only have a birth certificate.
Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Suzie Kupit urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
Sanisi was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
After completing his jail sentence, Sanisi was ordered referred to the Immigration Department.
