Filipino jailed for staying illegally for four years

Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old Filipino who stayed in the State for four years without any document was sentenced to three months’ jail.

Alwadan Burhan pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Abu Bakar Manat.

Alwadan was arrested recently in the city and found to have entered the State illegally.

He committed the offence under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which provides for a jail term up to five years, or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, and whipping, upon conviction.

In asking for leniency, Alwadan who was not represented, told the court that he has two children who are currently with his wife in the Philippines.

He also informed the court that prior to his arrest, he worked in the State as labourer.

Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Lim Swee Beng urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence.

After completing his jail sentence, Alwadan was ordered referred to the Immigration Department for deportation.
