PUTRAJAYA: The health ministry has reported a record high of 2,188 Covid-19 cases and four deaths in the past 24 hours.
In a statement, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,673 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 44,153.
Noor Hisham said the 2,188 new cases bring the total number of cases in the country to 58,847.
The previous record high was yesterday with 1,884 cases.
There were 1,623 cases in Selangor alone, followed by 232 in Sabah and 112 in Perak.
Noor Hisham said all of the 2,188 cases were local transmissions, with 1,511 or 93.1% of today’s total cases from the Teratai cluster in Selangor.
He said most of the cases in Sabah (131) were detected through close contact screenings, while all of the 112 cases in Perak were from existing clusters.
A total of 107 cases today were from prisons, 103 of which were from the Tembok cluster in Kedah.
The Seberang Perai cluster in Penang detected two new cases, while the Kepayan and Sandakan cluster in Sabah both recorded one case each.
Other states with new cases reported today were Kuala Lumpur (90), Negeri Sembilan (73), Johor (19), Penang (15), Kedah (14), Kelantan (6) and Melaka (2). Sarawak and Labuan both recorded one case each.
On the four deaths today, Noor Hisham said they involved two Malaysians and one foreigner in Sabah, and another Malaysian in Penang. They were aged between 41 and 84.
The patient in Penang had a history of chronic illnesses.
There are currently 14,353 active cases with 112 patients receiving intensive care, of which 49 require respiratory assistance.
Perlis, Pahang, Terengganu and Putrajaya did not record any new cases today.
