SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) today conducted disinfection operation on more than 100 stage buses in Batu Sapi here in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19
Sandakan JBPM chief Martin Thomas said the proactive measure was taken to ensure the safety and health of passengers, especially in Batu Sapi, which is among the areas with the highest number of Covid-19 cases in Sandakan.
“We also teach bus operators how to disinfect their vehicles on both the exterior and interior so that they can do it themselves from time to time,” he told reporters after the operation.
The operation also involved personnel from the district police headquarters, the district health office, the Sandakan Municipal Council and the National Security Council.
Sandakan Disaster Operations Control Centre deputy chairman ACP Azhar Mohd Hamin who is also the Sandakan district police chief said the programme would be expanded to e-hailing vehicles as well as public places, including mosques.
Meanwhile, he said police have tightened roadblocks on two main roads to Batu Sapi soon after the declaration of Emergency in the parliamentary constituency of Batu Sapi was made last week.
“We want to ensure that the people always adhere to the standard operating procedures that have been set,” he added.
The parliamentary by-election for Batu Sapi which was scheduled for Dec 5 will not go on following the proclamation of emergency by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah in the constituency on Nov 18.
The state of emergency was declared following the spike in Covid-19 cases and emergence of new clusters in the area.
As of yesterday, Sandakan recorded 1,155 active cases.
