Kota Kinabalu: Two men were fined a total of RM2,400 by the Magistrate’s Court here for taking drugs.

Ezra Panil, 43, and Mohd Raime Madran, 44, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to committing the offence at 9.20am and 9.15am respectively on Nov 19 at the Narcotic Investigation Division of the Police Headquarters here.

The charges against them stated that they were each tested positive for syabu and amphetamine.

Ezra, a general worker and Raime, a security guard were ordered to pay a fine of RM1,200 or five months’ jail each.

The court also ordered them to be placed under the supervision of police and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) for two years each.

Earlier, Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zong @ Lawrence representing both Ezra and Raime applied for a lower fine on the grounds that they had pleaded guilty at the first instance.

Lim told the court that Ezra and Raime were married and have children and were the sole breadwinner to their respective family.

Ezra and Raime were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik prosecuted.
