Seeking Unesco geopark status for Kinabalu Park
Four major threats identified
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Parks Director Dr Maklarin Lakim said an application to Unesco for Kinabalu Park to be declared a Geopark was submitted this year to the UN agency.

 Unesco Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

 He said this in a webinar titled: “Celebration of the 20th anniversary of Kinabalu Park being recognised as a World Heritage Site”. Sabah Parks with the involvement of other government agencies and stakeholders held the webinar to celebrate Kinabalu Park being declared a World Heritage Site since Dec 2, 2000, Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site with Sarawak’s Mulu National Park, all located in East Malaysia.
