Kota Kinabalu: The health of Sabah’s remaining forests is not only dependent on the climate but also its historical biodiversity connection and evolution relationship with neighbouring forests remaining in now colonially formed nation states in Southeast Asia.At the Sabah Forestry Department (SFD) Webinar vide Zoom, recently, Dr Lim Jun Ying of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore reminded the audience that Southeast Asia in the past one million years was connected together on the Sunda Shelf landmass to Asia continent.
“You can walk from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu,” he said in an analogy of that possibility if the status quo today is as it was at the last glacial maximum era time frame. Rising sea level flooded at least 40 per cent of the lowland habitat (up to 127 metres below current level).
