Kota Kinabalu: A 33-year-old man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail and fined RM2,000 or two months’ jail on Monday for assaulting a man with a pair of scissors, six months ago.
Muhd Alsabah Gapra pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to causing hurt to one Ag Akmal Suhaimi, 25, with the weapon at 5pm on June 28 on a bridge at Kg Sembulan Lama here.
Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, prosecuting, told the court that on the said day Alsabah was called by an unknown man, who then brought him to the said bridge.
Alsabah was then assaulted by five unknown men for refusing to give them money as demanded by them.
Alsabah stabbed Akmal’s right shoulder with a scissor before leaving.
Due to the attack, the victim received two stitches on his injury.
Unrepresented, Alsabah, requested for leniency and for the sentence to run from the date of his arrest.
He added that he has dependants namely his wife, his mother and a sibling.
The prosecution applied for an adequate sentence.
Alsabah was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or with fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishment, on conviction.
In another case, a 45-year-old man was charged with taking drugs.
However, no plea was taken from the man after the charge was read out to him pending the chemist’s report.
Suzie in applying for a mention date proposed bail at RM4,000.
Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing the man applied for a lower bail sum on the grounds that the accused, who is married with one child, is currently unemployed.
The court set Jan 20 for mention and offered the accused bail at RM1,000 undeposited in two sureties.
The man was charged under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.
