Kota Kinabalu: A major cleanliness drive to prevent rubbish from being washed by strong waves to neighbouring Sandakan was organised in Turtle Islands (Taganak), Tawi-Tawi, Philippines, early last week.

Mayor Faizal Jamalul said the early morning activity on Dec. 8 was designed to promote and ensure good hygiene among residents and keep the municipality environment-friendly.

“It is also our intention to ensure our friendly neighbour Sandakan, which is just couples of nautical miles away, will not be littered with rubbish washed there by strong waves from our place,” he said.

Faizal said ensuring a friendly environment will protect the natural beauties of the place and its inhabitants, adding Turtle Islands is known as one of the nesting places for endangered green turtles, including the recently discovered migration of sea otters.
