LABUAN: Labuan will soon have its very own Sky Mirror as a tourist attraction - the newly-discovered Larai-Larai Island off Kg Bebuloh waters.
The floating island, which is about 15 minutes away by boat from Kg Bebuloh Laut jetty, was found to be unexplored and offers unique scenery.
During low tide and with the sea water receding, the island will appear as a sprawling beauty spanning two football fields.
Labuan Corporation chief executive officer Dr Fary Akmal Osman said the unexplored island could be a competitor to Selangor’s eco-tourism product Sky Mirror in Kuala Selangor.
“When the tides are right, the shallow waters envelope the sandbar to transform it into a massive mirror that stretches almost as far as the eye can see, reflecting the sky and everything beneath it.
“This natural phenomenon will be made known as ‘Sky Mirror Labuan’ or even the Salar de Uyuni, a comparison to the famous salt flats of Bolivia where a similar phenomenon can be seen.
“So, for domestic travellers from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan, why head as far as South America or Kuala Selangor when you can experience it right here in Labuan?” she said to Bernama after making a tour of the island today.
She said the Sky Mirror phenomenon could make it the perfect spot for amazing and creative photographs, drawing many tourists and professional photographers.
Fary said Labuan Corporation would build infrastructures like jetty for local boat operators to transport visitors and tourists to the island.
“We will package this floating Larai-Larai Island attraction into Labuan’s tourism calendar next year as Rarecation 2021,” she said.
Fary said it would be a good event to help revive the tourism sector, which has been badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It is about seeking out the beauty in our own backyards, and how we can tap and persuade Malaysians to travel and discover the length and breadth of our blessed land, which is much loved by visitors near and far,” she added.
