Kota Kinabalu: The Chinese community celebrated the Winter Solstice Festival in a sombre manner due to the Covid-19 pandemic on Monday.

Dubbed one of the more significant celebrations next to Chinese New Year, the Winter Solstice Festival, also known as Dong Zhi Festival, is observed by having family dinner and dumplings – a must-have.

Sarawakian Nora Tan said the festival is a time for family.  “According to our elders, the festival represents balance, harmony and celebrated with dishes symbolising togetherness.

“But since my family is in Miri, I can't go back to celebrate with them this year,” Nora, who is married to a Keningau man, said.
