Kota Kinabalu: A 24-year-old Filipina was, Thursday, sentenced to 13 years’ jail for trafficking a 16-year-old girl for the purpose of sex exploitation.

Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence to Nur Farini Dasid, a IMM13 holder, after she was convicted of committing the offence.

Nur Farini was found guilty of committing the offence in early May 2018 at a reflexology centre in Api–Api Centre, here. The charge, under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, carries a jail term of between three years and 20 years, and liable to fine, on conviction.

In mitigation, Nur Farini, who was under remand since she was charged, requested for a lenient sentence on the grounds that she missed her three children and promised not to commit similar offence in the future.

She was on July 1, 2020 ordered to enter her defence to the charge.

Eight prosecution witnesses and three defence witnesses were called throughout the trial.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Megat Mahathir Megat Tharih Affendy prosecuted while Nur Farini was represented by counsel Azhier Farhan.

The court ordered Nur Farini to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest on Oct 8, 2018 and ordered her to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.
