Three crew members missing, two rescued as tugboat sinks off Kinabatangan

SANDAKAN: Three tugboat crew members were reported missing after their vessel towing a barge sank in the waters off Kuala Kinabatangan Besar early Wednesday, said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

Tugboat skipper Mohamad Mal, 49, Mohd Hafiz Isyra Nagrah, 22, and Azlan Hassan, 23, went missing in the mishap, which occurred while the tugboat named Ever Winner was towing the Ever Eternity from Kinabatangan to here.

The tugboat's chief engineer, Asman Mohamad, 31, managed to swim to shore while an Ever Eternity crew member, Roslie Antala, 48, was found safe in shallow waters after the incident in which cables used by the tugboat to tow the barge snapped.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing as of this report.
