Kota Kinabalu: A Sabah opposition lawmaker feels that the country should impose a total lockdown if it is serious in combating the Covid-19 outbreak.

Luyang Assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe (pic) said the current second phase of the Movement Control Order (MCO 2.0) seems to be a waste of time, as many people are still moving around as they please.

This, he said, is due to more business sectors being allowed to operate, but with relaxed SOPs as compared to the first MCO, last year.

Phoong said while he understands the need to make sure the economy runs smoothly during the MCO 2.0, he also questioned why other businesses are not permitted to operate.

“In my opinion, it is either we implement a full lockdown or be fair and equal to all,” he posted on his Facebook account.

“If one really needs to open businesses for the economy, then let all sectors operate by enhancing SOP enforcement.

“The Government must make a decision, whether to impose a strict MCO like before, or to continue with economic activities throughout this challenging pandemic,” he said.

Otherwise, Phoong noted, the Government might as well impose a full lockdown rather than declaring an MCO with relaxed SOPs, which ultimately beats the whole purpose of the move.

The Sabah DAP Youth chief said certain sectors rely on festivities, such as beauty salons, florists, boutiques and tailors, which are not allowed to open.

“They rely heavily on the upcoming Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day and they do not draw any crowds while not operating. Why are they banned from operating?

“We might have to face this virus for another year or two. The Government must come up with a long term plan and let us acknowledge these solutions,” he said.

Shutting down certain industries would not help flatten the curve nor curb the pandemic, he added.

Phoong also said the Government should consider mass swab tests and implementing strict quarantine orders.
