LABUAN: The Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce welcomed the Federal government’s decision to delay the imposition of tobacco tax for duty-free islands of Langkawi, Pangkor, Tioman and Labuan for three months.

It added that in the case of Labuan, such reprieve should be until the proposed Labuan-Menumbok bridge is ready.

Its Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii (pic) said, “Labuan, unlike Langkawi, has limited tourism icons and needs continued sales of duty-free items including fags to attract visitors and tourism is important for Labuan”.

“This year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been a very bad year for the local tourism industry with almost zero actual holidaymakers to the island and 128 events planned for the year, including sports-based events to woo domestic and foreign tourists – had been cancelled.
