Drug offences: 18 penalised

Kota Kinabalu: Eighteen people were penalised by the Magistrate’s Court here for committing drug-related offences.

Ten of them pleaded guilty to taking drugs while eight admitted to having syabu.

The ten people were Azwan Basir, Asri Asrin, Miswari Hamsita, Majuan Andebis, Lorensius Lesu, How Wei Loon, Sipius Paulus, Gary Golin, Teng Ming Yang and Prisca Enggu.

They were arrested at separate locations here and in Penampang between May, 2020 and Jan 21 this year after they tested positive for syabu and amphetamine, respectively.

Asri and Majuan were ordered to pay a fine of RM2,600 or seven months jail each while Sipius and Gary were fined RM2,000 or six months jail each and How and Teng were fined RM1,800 and RM1,300, respectively.

Prisca was handed 12 months jail while Azwan and Miswari were sentenced to seven months’ jail each and Lorensius, six months jail.

Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.

Meanwhile, the other eight people, who admitted to having syabu were Khaisel Ibnu, Albab Abiliho, Bon Zulamin, Stephen Tickson, Jamri John, Teng Yau Jun, Nadzemuddin Sidik and Sharif Ismail.

Bon, Stephen, Jamri, Nadzemuddin and Sharif were each ordered to pay a fine of RM3,000 or eight months jail while  Albab, Teng and Khaisel were jailed 10 months, eight months and seven months, respectively.

They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both on conviction.

The 18 were brought before Magistrates Lovely Natasha Charles, Jessica Ombou Kakayun and Stephanie Sherron Abbie.

Meanwhile, in the case of a 31-year-old man charged with trafficking 1.025kg cannabis, he will have his case mention back on Feb 9.

The court set the date for Ahmad Farizul Ismail, as he was not brought to the court for mention of his case on Friday

Ahmad, unemployed, was accused of committing the offence at 3.30pm on Feb 24, 2020 at a delivery company in Kolombong.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries a punishment with either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes.
