Mysterious 'explosion' sends social media abuzz

KOTA KINABALU: People in the southern coastal districts along the West Coast of Sabah as well as in Lawas, Sarawak, and Brunei Darussalam claimed to have heard and felt a “strange explosion” at about 11am, Sunday.The actual cause is still unknown.

Checks with the Malaysian Meteorological Department Sabah said it cannot confirm the cause of the said explosion, but confirmed that the 24-hour National Weather and Earthquake Operations Centre did not detect any occurrence of an earthquake or seismic activity.
The police and navy also did not detect any explosion occurring within Sabah waters and on lands, while Petronas also says all is okay.

The National Seismic Council (NSC) of Brunei Darussalam is said to have detected a Moderate Seismic Activity at 11.03 AM (JRDB Station) that is clearly not caused by an earthquake or natural tremor within Brunei and surrounding countries and that the seismic activity has been felt by a number of locations in Brunei Darussalam. The Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam (PABD) is also said to have received reports of a strange explosion in the sky was heard from Brunei Darussalam, but nothing was known yet about the cause of the explosion.

A social media user also reported seeing a bright light in the sky after the explosion.
