Covid-19: 2,468 new cases detected in Malaysia, 14 fatalities bring death toll to 1,076

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 2,468 Covid-19 cases and 14 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 4,055 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 256,678.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 288,229, FMT reported.

There are 30,475 active cases, with 196 patients being treated in intensive care and 92 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 14 deaths take the number of fatalities to 1,076.

The new cases today involved 2,464 local infections and four imported cases. Local cases comprised 1,549 Malaysians and 915 foreigners.

Selangor detected the highest number of infections with 932, of which 579 were detected from clusters and close contact screenings.

This was followed by Johor (428), Perak (308), Kuala Lumpur (155), Penang (155), Sarawak (133), Negeri Sembilan (100), Kelantan (96), Sabah (94), Melaka (22), Kedah (15), Pahang (11), Terengganu (nine), Labuan (six) and Putrajaya (four).

No cases were recorded in Perlis.

A total of 175 cases were linked to prison, lock-up and detention centre clusters, with 107 coming from the Tembok Bendera cluster.

This was followed by the Tembok Bukit Besi (36), Tembok Pengkalan Chepa (19), Jalan Harapan prison (nine), Seberang Perai prison (two), Jalan Sungai Jelok prison (one) and Penjara Kepayan (one) clusters.

The 14 who died comprised 13 Malaysians and one foreigner, with the youngest being a 30-year-old in Johor and the oldest a 77-year-old woman from Selangor.

All but two of the deceased suffered from other illnesses.
