Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases up again at 2,253 after yesterday’s dip, alongside 11 deaths

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 2,253 Covid-19 cases and 11 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,085 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 266,846.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 295,951, FMT reported.

There are 27,994 active cases, with 201 patients being treated in intensive care and 93 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 11 deaths take the number of fatalities to 1,111.

With today’s recoveries, the overall recovery has again surpassed the 90% rate.

The last time the recovery rate was above 90% was on Sept 27, 2020. The lowest it has been was 64% on Oct 17.

The new cases today involved 2,246 local infections and seven imported cases. Local cases comprised 1,324 Malaysians and 922 foreigners.

Selangor detected the highest number of infections with 633, of which 502 were detected from clusters and close contact screenings.

This was followed by Perak (545), Johor (276), Sarawak (250), Sabah (129), Kuala Lumpur (122), Penang (93), Kelantan (73), Negeri Sembilan (68), Kedah (25), Pahang (21), Melaka (13), Perlis (4), Terengganu (1). No cases were detected in Putrajaya and Labuan.

A total of 95 cases were linked to prison, lock-up and detention centre clusters, with 54 coming from the Tembok Tapah cluster.

This was followed by the Tembok Pengkalan Chepa cluster (28), Telok Mas (6), Jalan Sungai Jelok Prison (3), Tembok Sungai Udang (2), Seberang Perai Prison (1) and Tembok Bukit Besi (1).

The 11 who died included eight Malaysians and three foreigners, with the youngest being a 36-year-old man in Kuala Lumpur and the oldest were two 78-year-old men in KL and Johor.

Seven of them suffered from other illnesses.
