Filipino jailed for keeping someone else’s MyKad

Kota Kinabalu: A 46-year-old unemployed Filipino was sentenced to 16 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here Friday for keeping someone else’s MyKad.

Ibrahim Maruji pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to having one Stephen Radin @ Azmi’s MyKad bearing the serial number of 680710-12-5169 at 3pm on Feb 18, at Inanam town.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, in presenting the facts of the case, told the court that Ibrahim was arrested by police during the operation on illegal cigarette and drug junkie jointly conducted by several authority bodies.

A body search conducted on Ibrahim found a wallet containing Stephen’s MyKad, the court heard.

Investigations revealed that Ibrahim, who has no valid document, confessed that he found the document on the roadside in Inanam town and had kept it for his own use, said Kelvan.

Unrepresented, Ibrahim requested for leniency saying he was suffering from a gout and that he has five children.

Kelvan applied for a deterrent sentence and for Ibrahim be referred to the Immigration Department.

The court ordered Ibrahim to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and ordered him referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence.

Ibrahim was charged under Section 25(1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations, which provides for a jail term of up to three years or fine on conviction.

In another case, two people were penalised for committing drug-related offences.

Mohd Hazrul Migo was ordered to pay a fine of RM3,000 or nine months jail after he admitted to having 0.7gm of syabu at 1pm on Oct 4, 2020 in Penampang.

Cindy Gadong, 39, was fined RM2,000 or five months jail after she pleaded guilty to taking syabu.

The court also ordered Cindy be placed under police supervision for two years.

Hazrul was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years or both on conviction.

Cindy had committed an offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail or both on conviction.
