Resident’s plan to replace zinc goes up in flames
Kota Kinabalu: The plan of a resident of Kampung Lok Urai in Pulau Gaya, near here, to replace the zinc roof of his house went up in flames when the house was destroyed in a fire Thursday night.

Ali Hasan Amin, 60, said the zinc roof worth more than RM1,000 he bought a few days ago was also destroyed in the 8.30pm fire.

“At the time of the incident, I was at home and the fire first broke out at a house next to mine,” he said at the Likas multipurpose hall, here, Friday.

A housewife, Nornada Wilso, 37, was worried when her six-year-old son went missing while saving herself and her 12 family members.

“Thank God, we found him later at the end of the jetty,” she said.

Another resident, Norozi Nordin, 34, said when the electricity supply was cut off, he went out to see what was happening and realised that fire was raging his neighbours’ houses.

Together with several other villagers, he tried to break down the walls of a house nearby and pour sea water onto the house to prevent the fire from spreading. “We then rescued other residents and take them to a safe place. It was sad to see the damaged houses and belongings,” he said.
