Kota Kinabalu: Sabah hopes to step up socio-economic relations with Indonesia, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He said socio-economic initiatives under Social Economy Malaysia Indonesia (Sosek-Malindo) have been bringing in positive results that need to be further strengthened.
Similarly, he said the East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) that also includes Sabah and Indonesia’s Kalimantan was also bringing about a positive development for both countries.
“Sosek-Malindo and BIMP-EAGA have brought about positive socio-economic benefits for both countries,” he said after receiving a courtesy call from the Indonesian Consul General for Kota Kinabalu Krishna Djelani, Monday.
“We hope to see more border trade that will bring more benefits for the people of both countries,” he added.
Hajiji said there was still a lot of room to further develop socio-economic relations between the two countries, especially with Sabah.
Last week, Hajiji had announced that the Federal Government had approved RM600 million for the development of a road and Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (CIQS) Complex at the entry point in Serudong (Sabah)/Simanggaris (Kalimantan) to check all cross-border crossings.
The move is part of efforts by Sabah to commercially connect with Indonesia Kalimantan, where there are talks shifting the Indonesian administrative capital in Jakarta to eastern Kalimantan.
