Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was jailed a total of 18 months on Tuesday on two counts of burglary and having stolen property.
Taufiq Karman pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing the offences.
Taufiq was sentenced to eight months’ jail for breaking into Rong Ji Tang shop at Penampang new township between 3am and 7.30am on March 16, this year.
On the second count, Taufiq was handed 10 months jail for having a stolen wristwatch worth RM120 at 11.30am on March 22 in front of the main entrance of the Centre Point Complex.
The court heard from the prosecution that on the first count, the complainant, who lodged a police report, reported that the premises was broken into and RM300 cash were stolen from the cashier machine.
The prosecution also informed the court that on the second count, a wristwatch was reported stolen from a shop at Bundusan Square.
The court ordered Taufiq to serve the jail terms consecutively.
The first count was framed under Section 457 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 14 years and liability of a fine on conviction, while the second count under Section 411 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to five years or fine or both if convicted.
In another case, a 55-year-old man was fined RM100 or one day jail for fraudulently having RM9,020.71 in his bank account.
Chong Ngean Soon admitted to having the money, which belonged to one Ng Siew Ching, on Oct 30, 2020 here.
The charge stated that Chong failed to account satisfactorily on how he obtained the money.
Chong was charged under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance, which provides for a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months jail or both on conviction.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man was charged with threatening to injure a man.
No plea was taken from Abdullah Banong, who appeared before Stephanie via video conferencing.
Abdullah was accused of criminally intimidating one Jailani Sihaji by saying to him “Kalau berani, keluar la, saya bunuh kamu (If you dare, get out, I’ll kill you)” at 11pm on March 13 this year in front of a house at Kg Tanjung Aru Baru in Tanjung Aru.
The charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both on conviction.
The prosecution informed the court that Abdullah’s Covid-19 swab test result was not ready and objected bail pending the mention date.
The court set April 12 for mention and ordered Abdullah to be remanded further.
