THE just-concluded Mrs World Sri Lanka 2021 pageant witnessed a dramatic end when the winner was unceremoniously stripped of her crown.
Moments after crowning Pushpika De Silva as the winner, Mrs World Sri Lanka 2019 Caroline Jurie seized the former’s crown during a national broadcast.
ADVERTISEMENT Jurie who is also Mrs World 2020 titleholder claimed De Silva could not be named the winner as she is divorced.
Jurie further said the crown should go to the first runner-up and then walked over to De Silva and took the crown off of her head.
De Silva then left the stage.
Organisers have since confirmed De Silva is not divorced and they have returned the crown, BBC News reported.
ADVERTISEMENT Mrs World Sri Lanka national director Chandimal Jayasinghe said that steps have been taken to award the crown to De Silva.
Colombo Page reported that Jayasinghe said that such incidents should not happen and no one can take back the crown which was unanimously given by the organising committee and the judges.

He added that Jurie had no moral right to do such a thing and her arrogant actions were not condoned.
De Silva said she is separated, but not divorced.

In a statement on her Facebook page, De Silva stressed that “living separately and being divorced are two completely separate things.”
“A true queen is not a woman who snatches another woman's crown, but a woman who fixes another woman's crown,” she said.
