CEO not keen on MFL salary cap

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Football League (MFL) Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan is personally not keen on introducing a salary cap for the Malaysia League (M-League).

He said that the M-League, which comprises the Super League, Premier League, Malaysia Cup and Challenge Cup competitions, was an open business and that setting a salary cap could affect efforts to raise the M-League’s commercial value.

He added that a salary cap would dampen the interest of local players to continue plying their trade in the M-League and force them to seek better offers with other teams elsewhere.

“As a league with professional status, we must be seen by others as a league that is competitive,” he told reporters during a get-together with the media at the MFL Headquarters in Kelana Jaya here, Thursday.

The Kedah Football Association (KFA) president urged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and MFL to consider this aspect in organising the football industry for the benefit of the teams and players.

Ab Ghani, who is aware that teams are already plagued by the issue of salary arrears for players and team officials this season, said teams should first have a good financial management plan and adopt a budget that suits them.

“Teams must be smart to manage budget and salary. They must offer salaries based on their budget. Don’t offer more than their budget allows because that will cause them to be in arrears,” he said.

Local media had reported that several teams were already facing such a problem, with Perak FC and Kedah Darul Aman FC allegedly owing two months’ salary.

Ab Ghani said that as the M-League governing body, the MFL had contacted the alleged teams and received positive feedback and that efforts to overcome the problem are ongoing.
