Kota Kinabalu: Local production company ‘Paper Pen Events’ is set to produce a new television series called “Borneo Culinary Adventures Sabah”, which will showcase traditional local food in efforts to preserve Sabah’s food heritage and culture.

Directed by Chua Soon Min aka Katak Chua, the 13-episode programme would feature local food cuisines of the KadazanDusunMurut and local Chinese.

The foods will range from Sinalau Bakas, Kava Meat Soup, Sandakan Spring noodles, Hinava and Linopot, among others. It’s producer Chris Chin, 26, said the all-Sabahan production team will travel to 13 districts across the State to gain in-depth insight of the foods unique to each district. He added that the team is set on unearthing the true origin of each food that may be lost in translation among the newer generation. “Most of our cuisine and culinary documentations are passed down by word of mouth. For example, the linopot (rice wrapped in leaves). “We asked many people why they prepare (the rice) in this way, many say they do not know why, they are just doing what the older generation taught them.

“When in fact it’s because in the olden days, fishermen who went to sea needed to bring food that would last longer, so they wrapped the rice in tarap leaves.

“There is no proper documentation of these things. That’s why we hope to dive deeper and talk to the ‘orang tua’ in the villages so they can tell us their stories,”

He told reporters during the production’s kick-off ceremony at Plaza 333 Commercial Centre, here, Thursday. The kick-off was officiated by DAP’s Luyang Assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe. Malaysia Entrepreneurs’ Development Association (PUMM) Sabah Liaison Chairman Dato’ George Lim was also present.

Additionally, Chris said the heritage of a tribe and community can be significantly represented by their cuisine. “Sabah is not only blessed with harmonious races and cultures, we are also graced by the wide range of food preparation, preserving and cooking. “The production team is hoping to showcase the culinary history, background and stories of the people of Sabah through this show,” he said.

The show will begin filming on April 9 and is set to premiere on Astro AEC Channel and Astro GO on Aug 8, screening every Thursday at 10pm. It will be hosted by Astro Star Quest 2010 First Runner Up Stephanie Liew alongside her co-host Chuan Pui Kei, food enthusiast of online cooking page ‘Slurpin’.

On concerns regarding the team’s interdistrict travel during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), Chris said they have obtained special permission to do so from the relevant authorities.
