Man fined over false police statement

Kota Kinabalu: A 19-year-old man who gave a false statement to police claiming that he was robbed was fined RM1, 400 or two months jail on Friday.

Russell Teo pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to giving the false statement to Inspector Mohd Anwar Mohd Jamil at 12.05am on March 27 this year at  Wisma Inti Utama, Jalan Dewan here.

The charge stated that Teo gave a false written statement claiming that an unknown man in a motorcycle snatched his knapsack while he was waiting for his cousin at 8pm on March 26 at Inanam town.

The court heard that police found the report lodged by Teo was fake as there was no such incident.

Teo later confessed to having fabricated the story, the court heard.

The loss of Teo’s MyKad and bank cards as stated by him in his police report was untrue because the documents were lost two days before Teo lodged the police report, said the prosecution.

Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing Teo, applied for a lenient sentence on the grounds that he wanted to further his studies at a college which would require expenses.

To a question, Teo through his counsel said he committed the offence as he wanted to avoid being fined by the National Registration Department for the loss of his MyKad.

Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, applied for an appropriate sentence as a lesson to Teo because it was a serious offence.

Teo was charged under Section 182 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to six months or fine up to RM2,000 or both on conviction.

In another case, a 28-year-old Filipino claimed trial to causing damages to a lorry.

Bocoi was accused of breaking the windscreen of a lorry belonging to Tan Seng Teck at 9pm on April 4 at the Kayu Madang landfill, Sepanggar causing loss of RM1,000.

Bocoi was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between one year and five years or with fine or with both, upon conviction.

The court set May 19 for mention no bail offered as Bocoi has no valid document.

Meanwhile, in the Sessions Court, Bocoi was jailed four months for staying in the State illegally.

The offence under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, provides for a jail term of up to five years, or a fine of up to RM10,000, upon conviction.
