Kota Kinabalu: A 39-year-old man who robbed a woman of her handphone was jailed eight years.
Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence to Misly Robin who pleaded guilty to the charge.
Misly has robbed Karsum Musa of her handphone at 5.50am on April 22 this year by the roadside along Jalan Coastal, near the Imago shopping mall, here.
The offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 14 years and whipping, upon conviction.
The court ordered Misly to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest on May 11.
Misly who was not represented, asked for leniency.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Adibah Saiful Bahri urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on the grounds that the it was a serious offence.
The court heard that while Karsum was walking alone at the area, a man approached her and pointed a test-pen towards her and asked her to surrender her handbag.
Karsum let go her handbag containing her handphone as she feared about her safety.
The man, later identified as Misly, fled and ran into the bushes near the area.
Following a police report lodged by Karsum, Misly was arrest on May 11 this year and showed the police the bag belonging to Karsum.
During the identification parade, Karsum had identified Misly as the person who robbed her.
