BEAUFORT: The Public Works Department (PWD) has been urged to improve the road between Sipitang and Beaufort to prevent tragedies.

Motorist, Mohammad Salleh, said Jalan Sipitang to Beaufort is in dire need of attention from PWD.

Citing an incident involving an ambulance transporting two pregnant women to Kota Kinabalu, Mohammad said the ambulance’s tyre exploded after hitting a pothole in the Lumadan area.

“The ambulance was travelling at a high speed as it was transporting the patients. The ambulance driver was unable to avoid hitting the pothole, resulting in its tyre bursting.

The forum, set for Feb 4-5, 2026, aims to strengthen Sabah's position as a competitive Asia Pacific hub for Business Events and cross-border collaboration.
“How much time has to be wasted having to change tyres. This could have been avoided if the roads are well maintained.

“If Jalan Sipitang to Beaufort continue to be left as it is, how are motorists expected to ply the route safely, especially now that the Pan Borneo project has not been completed,” said Mohammad.

“While waiting for the Pan Borneo Highway to be completed, this road should always be well maintained to ensure safety for all road users plying the route.

“We urge the PWD Director to go down to the field to observe and monitor damages on the roads to prevent untoward incidents,” he said.

It is understood that another vehicle had also experienced damages to his car rims after hitting a pothole along the stretch, while another motorist had his windscreen smashed by stones that fell from a lorry laden with stones.
