Kota Kinabalu: A man was jailed seven years and ordered given three strokes of the cane for taking drugs repeatedly.
Mashsafirul Suhaili pleaded guilty to taking drugs on May 21, 2020 after his urine was tested positive at the Papar police station.
Mashsafirul has several conviction records for taking drugs.
The court ordered him to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving the jail sentence.
He was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
The offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39C (2) of the same Act which provides for a jail term of between five and seven years, and whipping, on conviction.
Meanwhile, in another case, a man was charged with entering the State illegally.
However, no plea was recorded from Jass Ajid after the charge was read to him before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus, via Zoom on Monday.
His plea would be recorded on Jan 27 in open court.
Pending the mention date, Jass was ordered remanded further.
Meanwhile, eight people were penalised by the Magistrate’s Court, Monday, for committing various drug-related offences.
Seven of them - Sitimun Gadil, David Lim, Abdul Razak Addani, Lo Pau Loong, Jeffry Son, Muhamin Hamzah and Azmi Rahmat pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to taking syabu at separate locations here between Sept 11 and Nov 10, last year.
Sitimun and Lim were fined RM2,000 or seven months jail each while the rest were sentenced to seven months’ jail each.
The seven had committed an offence under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction.
Meanwhile, Abdul Razak and another man Malcolm Lance were handed nine months jail each for having syabu.
Abdul Razak admitted to having 0.07gm of syabu at 2pm on Sept 19, 2021 at Kg Air here while Malcolm pleaded guilty to having 0.15gm syabu at 3.30pm on Sept 9, last year at Putatan.
They were both charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both, on conviction.

In another case, a 27-year-old plumber was fined RM200 or two weeks jail for not fastening the seatbelt while driving a car six years ago. Rony Chang pleaded guilty to committing the offence at 10.10am on Feb 3, 2016 along Jalan Pintas-Penampang in front of the Padimas Point, near here.
He was charged under Section 119(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 punishable under Section 119(2) of the same Act which carries a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to six months jail or both on conviction.
Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Chang, requested for a lower fine on the grounds that he works as a plumber.
