SANDAKAN: A Chevrolet Captiva SUV caught fire near Klinik Desa Batu 16, Jalan Gum-Gum Besar, here, Wednesday.According to Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jimmy Lagung, six firefighters led by Bernadinus Jacob were deployed to the area 23km away after receiving a distress call via MERS 999 at 4.02pm.
“By 4.40pm, the fire was under control and the operation ended at 5 pm,” he said in a statement, Wednesday.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
A report about a 10-tonne lorry catching fire and sustaining 40 per cent damage was also received by the team.

The incident occurred on Jalan Batu Sapi, which runs parallel to the Sandakan Port. In both situations, no injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, in KOTA KINABALU, an 81-year-old man was injured after his Hilux crashed near Jalan Lama Penampang-Lok Kawi, Wednesday.
It was learnt that the Hilux skidded and overturned before crashing near the gates of the Lok Kawi Military Base, some 10 feet away.
In the 12pm incident, the man, identified only as Ng, was flung from the driver’s seat to the front passenger’s seat due to the impact.
An eight-member Penampang fire and rescue team led by Jamaludin Hussin was dispatched to the spot.
The man was assisted out of the vehicle before being sent to the hospital.
