LAHAD DATU: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (Kepkas) approved an allocation of RM199,850 to upgrade tourist destinations in Lahad Datu.

Its Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said it was in line with the Ministry’s efforts to assist tourism operators in ensuring all infrastructure facilities at tourism destinations were in good condition.

He said this during a working visit to Menara Kayangan and Sapagaya Lahad Datu Forest Reserve Waterfall.

Menara Kayangan was built on Mount Silam, located about 11km from here, with an observation tower offering natural views of the Sapagaya forest reserve and Teluk Darvel.

Jafry said the Teluk Darvel Marine Park was expected to be gazetted by the end of this year. “It is in the process of preparing a gazette boundary proposal plan together with land application forms to be submitted to the Land and Survey Department,” he said.

He said the observation tower attracted many local and foreign tourists. However, until now, the area still has no electricity supply.

For that, Jafry said, he had asked the Forestry Department to submit an application to the Government to upgrade the infrastructure facilities so that the place can be made a destination of choice among tourists from within and outside the country in the future.

Kepkas is always committed to assist in providing support to all agencies, departments and tourism operators to revitalise the tourism industry in the State.
